A little about ourselves
The Bike Works isn’t any old bike old shop - it formed out of The Bike Shed, a community project getting giving free cycles to the unemployed in West Lancs and giving bikes to much needed areas in Africa.
We do this by fixing and donating second-hand bikes. The fixing is done down at our workshop, where volunteers learn the basics in bike mechanics, before fixing a bike up for themselves. By attending our workshop, all beneficiaries get actively involved in the process as much as possible, build up their skills, and form lasting friendships.
All the bikes we fix are donated to the project. Of these donations, we re-use parts and sell the most valuable ones, to generate funds to keep the project going. This way 100% of the proceeds are put into getting more people learning and cycling.
Can I volunteer?
We have volunteers of all shapes and sizes! From young people spending a week or two with us for work experience to retired people. All new volunteers will receive a warm welcome from friendly and supportive colleagues, make a valuable contribution to our work, enjoy being part of a team and benefit from the satisfaction of being involved with something useful that helps people and their communities in a big way.
Most of our volunteers do one morning or an afternoon a week. We have some who will spend a day with us and there are some who enjoy it so much they come in a couple of times a week. We can be flexible depending on what interests you and how much time you're able to commit.

We're a fairly small organisation that benefits greatly from the support of our wonderful team of volunteers and we are always looking for others to join us. We hope to make volunteering a rewarding and enjoyable experience for all. Having a practical nature is useful but appropriate training is provided and the only qualification needed is enthusiasm.
